Già nel corso degli anni Trenta, Walter Benjamin, all’interno del libro L’opera d’arte nell’epoca della sua riproducibilità tecnica (1936), formulò i concetti di ‘riproducibilità’ e ‘serialità’ riferiti alle immagini. Allora si trattava di un’epoca di grande cambiamento, in cui produzione seriale e industrializzazione erano due delle parole chiave in ambito economico e produttivo: in tale contesto, però, Benjamin fu in grado di anticipare i tempi e di comprendere che questa rivoluzione avrebbe certamente influenzato il campo artistico-creativo, in seguito alla Seconda guerra mondiale.
A quasi un secolo di distanza, questi argomenti sono ancora di vivo interesse: la mostra temporanea “Modules”, presso la Galleria Millepiani di Roma (1-28 febbraio 2018), è infatti una narrazione visuale e collettiva sui temi della ripetizione, riproduzione e serialità.
Una narrazione che attraversa differenti contesti, periodi e tecniche, a seconda del percorso prescelto da ciascun artista. E anche se l’autenticità di ogni opera è peculiare e unica, i visitatori saranno in grado di rintracciare tra di esse alcune somiglianze e affinità, sia iconografiche, sia tecniche.

MODULES

Already in the ’30s of the last century, within the book The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical reproduction (1936), Walter Benjamin formulated the ideas of ‘reproducibility’ and ‘seriality’ connected to the artworks’ images. It was an era of huge change then, where serial production and industrialisation became two of the main keywords within the economic branch: in this context, Benjamin was able to foresee a revolution that would have affected the cultural-creative field, after WWII.
In fact, almost a century later, all these topics are still of interest: the temporary exhibition “Modules”, organised within the Galleria Millepiani in Rome (1-28 February 2018), it is a collective and visual narrative focused on the themes of repetition, reproduction and seriality.
A narrative that goes through different lands, times and media, according to a specific path chosen by every artist. Even the authenticity of every work is peculiar and unique, the viewers will be able to trace certain similarities, affinities – both iconographical and technical.
