Untethered unisce due nuclei di opere che guardano al ritratto come a uno spazio di esposizione emotiva. Le fotografie di Johansson rifiutano la patina e l’artificio, soffermandosi invece su istanti in cui le persone appaiono indifese, sospese, introspettive.
Una serie colloca le figure nell’acqua, sospese tra l’assenza di gravità e la quiete. L’altra cattura espressioni e gesti intimi, rivelando stati emotivi sinceri e spesso ambigui. Insieme, i lavori creano una forte tensione tra la sospensione fisica e le emozioni interiori.
Questa tensione riflette anche il rapporto della stessa Johansson con l’identità. Con un background multiculturale e una vita vissuta attraversando diversi continenti, l’artista intende l’identità come un elemento fluido anziché fisso, modellabile da luoghi, incontri, ricordi e contraddizioni. La sua personalità espressiva e la sua spiccata sensibilità plasmano una pratica fotografica al contempo diretta e profondamente attenta alla complessità dei soggetti che ritrae.
In Untethered, l’identità non viene presentata come una risposta definitiva. È un elemento in delicato equilibrio, eppure in costante mutamento. Le fotografie lasciano ai soggetti lo spazio per essere complessi e indefiniti, al di là dei ruoli e delle apparenze attraverso cui siamo soliti riconoscerci reciprocamente.
Cruda, intima e silenziosamente provocatoria, Untethered esplora ciò che resta quando ci liberiamo del bisogno di definirci.

Fabula Works present a solo exhibition by Danish-born, Sweden-based photographer Sissela Johansson at Millepiani in Rome.
Untethered brings together two bodies of work that approach portraiture as a space of emotional exposure. Johansson’s photographs resist polish and performance, lingering instead on moments in which people appear unguarded, suspended, introspective.
One series places figures in water, suspended between weightlessness and stillness. The other captures intimate expressions and gestures, revealing sincere and often ambiguous emotional states. Together, the works create tension between physical suspension and inner emotions.
This tension also reflects Johansson’s own relationship with identity. With a multicultural background and a life lived across continents, she approaches identity as something fluid rather than fixed, which can be shaped by places, encounters, memories and contradictions. Her expressive personality and heightened sensitivity inform a practice that is both direct and deeply attentive to the complexity of the people she photographs.
In Untethered, identity is not presented as a finished answer. It is something delicately balanced yet continually shifting. The photographs leave their subjects room to be complex and undefined, beyond the roles and appearances through which we usually come to recognise one another.
Raw, intimate and quietly confrontational, Untethered explores what remains when we let go of the need to define ourselves.
